Herb Description

Sarsaparilla is a perennial plant. Sarsaparilla is native to South and Central America.Also found in Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean.It includes several  hundred species worldwide.It is also found throughout India & in the Himalayas and parts of China. Sarsaparilla is a woody, trailing vine that can reach to 50 m in height.It flowers in June, and the seeds ripen from August to September. Sarsaparilla flowers are hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees.The perennial plant requires sandy, loamy and clay soils and can grow in nutritionally poor soil. It can grow in semi-shade or deep woodland . It requires moist soil. Sarsaparilla is generally used to treat inflammatory skin conditions & also its one of the best blood purifiers.

Sarsaparilla was introduced in the middle of the 16th century as a treatment for syphilis, and later came to be used for other chronic diseases, specially rheumatism. It is a mild gastric irritant because of its saponin content. Sarsaparillas smoke was recommended for asthma.Its a well-known traditional Chinese medicine which has been taken to cure leptospirosis, to treat syphilis, and acute bacterial dysentery. Side Effects

Excess dose of Sarsaparilla can cause diarrhea and fluid loss leading to shock. Overdoses for long duration of time are to be avoided.In some cases, Sarsaparilla can lead to stomach problems and queasiness. It may also irritate the kidneys.

Sarsaparilla contains chemicals named saponins, which are poisonous to insects and other small creatures. It is reported that humans are not absorbed saponins from the gastrointestinal tract , therefore it doesn't appear to be toxic to humans when taken orally or used topically. However, saponins can dissolve red blood cells, which may result in serious effects that include death ,if injected into the human blood .Sarsaparilla can cause nausea and kidney damage.

Using oral sarsaparilla in very large quantity possibly could cause stomach upset or intestinal irritation. Kidney function can also be disrupted temporarily if large doses of sarsaparilla are used.

Dosage

Tea :

30 gm root boiled in one cup hot water.Take three times daily.

Capsules:

2-4 gm three times daily.

Tincture:

2-4 ml three times daily.

Drug Interactions

Sarsaparilla may possibly increase the absorption of the heart drug and compounds, digoxin by the body. If that happens, digoxin could increase dangerous levels in the blood. Some signs of excess digoxin may are blurred vision, irregular heartbeat, dizziness,rash, or upset stomach.

When sarsaparilla is taken with prescription drugs for insomnia in the same time, it may cause the drug to exit the body more quickly than it would ordinarily. As a result, the drug may not be as effective and the sleep-promoting effects of the drug may lessen. The effectiveness of other drugs supplements and herbal medicine may also be affected unpredictably by sarsaparilla.
