Herb Description

Butcher's broom is a short evergreen shrub that grows throughout southern Europe and the Mediterranean. Its a member of the Liliaceae family with stiff, pointed life-like twigs.It has tough, green,barkless stems, erect, striated stems that send out number of short branches & very rigid leaves that are actually extensions of the stem and terminate in a single sharp spine.The small white-greenish flowers mature from the center of the leaves and blossom in the early spring. The Butcher's Broom name comes from its use as a broom in butcher's shops in Europe up until the twentieth century.

The root has no smell, but has an initially sweetish taste that then turns slightly bitter. Both the root and stem of the small plant are used in many herbal medications.The root of this shrub has been used by the Greek doctors for the treatment of various circulatory disorders also for swelling and varicose veins since the ancient times of the Greeks.

This drought tolerate plant requires dry or moist soil & prefers sandy,loamy and heavy soils.It needs well drained soil and can develop in heavy clay & nutritionally poor soils.It can mature in deep woodland or light woodland.

Uses and Benefits

Scientific studies reported that butcher's broom can tighten the circulatory system's veins and increase the strength of the capillary walls.It is also used to mitigate inflammation brought on by carpal tunnel, arthritis, rheumatism, and varicose veins.

Butchers broom has been reported to be effective in treating a variety of conditions such as cardiovascular and circulatory disorders,dysmenorrhea ,endocrine disorders in women ,hot flashes , menopause ,morning sickness ,pain ,poisonous snake bites ,premenstrual syndrome, menstrual cramps with back pain,Rheumatic arthritis .

Butchers broom has been used to treat Chronic venous insufficiency ,Atherosclerosis , Hemorrhoids. It contains rich amount of flavonoids such as rutin and increase blood flow to the brain, legs, and hands. It ameliorate circulation, relieve constipation, and to relieve water retention discomfort.It can also be used to enhance the strength of the kidney and bladder .

Used as a mildly bitter tea it enhance circulation to the limbs and acts to ebb the incidence of post surgical thrombosis or blood clotting.It is also an efficacious for facial products, used to remove make up, anti cuperosis products and cosmetics to be applied to the eye surround or on sensitive and irritated skins.

Side Effects

Using butcher's broom orally has been associated with nausea or irregular and mild stomach upset.

Taking butchers broom tightens the blood vessels which may lead to worsen high blood pressure or benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). Butcher's broom is not prescribed for those person with high blood pressure.

Dosage

  • Tea:

2-4 teaspoons of fresh root per cup of boiling water .Infuse 10 - 20 minutes before drinking. Take thrice a day.

  • Fresh root:

1 - 2 tablespoon thrice a day.

  • Dried root:

1.5 - 3 gm thrice a day.
