Plant Description:

The astragalus is an herbaceous perennial that appears in China. It is used in traditional chinese medicine.The root of the plant is the most useful part as it is used as herbal remedies as a base ingredient to help with various ailments. This multi-stemmed plant attain height about 1 to 1.5m and has alternate, compound leaves composed of 12 to 18 pairs of small leaflets.

Its chineese name is hung qi, having a unique meaning that is "yellow leader", because the root is yellow. It has been used for centuries to boost the immune system. Roots of astragalus are dried and then it is used for medicinal purposes root having lot of compounds that are very useful in strengthen the immune system.

 

Uses and Benefits :

Astrlagus is used to boost up the immune system, respiratory endurance during pneumonia, bronchitis, whooping cough, and other respiratory ailments.It has been used to reduces the toxic effect of chemotherapy,tumors.

Also used for abscesses, chronic ulcers, and prolapsed uterus or anus.It strengthen the body's resistance to harmful invaders which add to an already debilitating disease. Generally used for digestive disorders such as diarrheoa, gas, and bloating, as well as chronic hepatitis.

Scientist discover that it is used for the treatment of cancer. Astragalus inhibits gastric secretions, reduces gastric acid and thus helps to cure stomach ulcers.It also cures kidney disease because it is diuteric,detoxicating and reduces proteinuria.

 

Dosage:

The dose recommended by the doctor should be taken once daily up to one month. The dose for children must be 1/3 of the adult dosage.

Astragalus can be taken in boiled water by adding 2 to 6 g of dried root per 12 oz water.As an ointment apply it to the wound surface.

Side Effects:

Astragalus is generally safe but sometimes it may interfere with the action of diuterics, phenobarbital, beta-blockers and anticoagulant. Some persons those are allergic may have these types of side effects.

  • Breathing problem or tightness in chest or throat.
  • Chest pain.
  • Skin hives, rash, or itchy or swollen skin.
