Poke Root - Uses and Benefits

Herb Description

This plant is beneficial only if used in a limit. It is potent & powerful .The name Poke is come from an Indian word "pocan", a name for some plant that yields a red dye, and from "pak", meaning "blood". Poke root comes from the root of the Poke plant and has cleansing and curing qualities that will effect the whole body. The poke herb is especially beneficial for dissolving tumors by cleansing the tissues through the blood vascular and lymphatic systems. It clear and remove boils, sores.

Poke is cultivated in all parts of the United States, It also grows spontaneously in Southern Europe & Northern Africa. Its flowers in July, and the fruit ripens in autumn. Poke grows up to 8 to 10 foot with dark green leaves, purple stems, and bright red to bluish-black berries.For basket coloring berries has been used as ink and paint.

The root has good values to cure the glandular system, inciting , increasing its action & clear impurities in the blood. Mashed pokeberries has been by the Mohegan Indians to relieve breast pain.In the first half of the19th century American physicians reported poke root as a topical treatment for cancer & used externally to those areas of the skin where cancer was visible.

Uses and Benefits

It can be used externally, as a lotion or ointment to rid the skin of scabies , pests, tinea, acne,skin infections and parasites, breast tumors, caked breasts, abscesses, and fungal infections. and it may be applied in a porridge to soothe ulcers, haemorrhoids and inflamed joints.

Researches reported that its proteins have feature to resist influenza , HSV-1 viruses and poliovirus. It can be used to cure abscesses, boils, and sores, or to relieve difficult urination by placing a porridge over the bladder area.

To reduce swelling of the skin,to make clear & smooth a blend of herbs and oils can use. It is useful to treat sore throats, earaches, herpes,catarrh , tonsillitis , laryngitis , swollen glands , mumps, stones and abnormal growths, such as cysts and breast lumps.

Side Effects

Its fresh herb is poisonous in nature, and use in excess quantity the dried root is an irritant, cathartic & emetic.

In over doses, Poke Root is a powerful emetic and purgative & may produce gastro enteritis with diarrhea & concomitant vomiting .

Not recommended for nursing mothers,pregnant women or children under the age of 6.also not use poke root if any one have liver or kidney disease.

Dosage

As prescribed:

Take 2 - 5 drops, up to 2 times daily .

Decoction:

Take l/4 teaspoonful of the root in a cup of water, bring to boil and simmer gently for l0-l5 minutes. This should be taken 3 times a day.

Tincture:

Take l/4 ml of the tincture 3 times a day.
