Herb Description

Gotu kola ( Centella asiatica) is a small herbaceous plant of the family Apiaceae deep-rooted to India and Southeast Asia. It is usually found growing naturally almost tropical, boggy regions of India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Madagascar, and South Africa. It is also grown in similar climates of Eastern Europe and some other parts throughout the world. Gotu kola is used as a medicinal plant in Ayurvedic medicine & traditional Chinese medicine .

Gotu kola is a vine-like plant has a long history of use to elevate wound healing & cure skin infections.For many thousands of years gotu kola has been used to cure a numerous conditions including hepatitis, syphilis, stomach ulcers, mental fatigue, epilepsy, diarrhea, and fever. Gotu kola's extract are used as drugs in Europe for the treatment of wound healing defects.

Both the leaves & roots of gotu kola contain compounds used in a numerous herbal preparations. In Ayurvedic medicine Gotu kola is used to cure the disorders of anxiety, insomnia, agitation, memory loss, epilepsy and hyperactivity.Gotu kola also help to boost blood flow through the veins in the legs.It has also been known one of the "miracle elixirs of life" due to the legend has it that an ancient Chinese herbalist lived for longer than 200 years as a result of taking the herbaceous plant .

Its mainly used to treat wound, boost vein function especially for varicose veins and hemorrhoids. It is a beneficial tonic and cleansing herb for skin disorders and digestive problems.

Today, European & American herbalists use gotu kola for problems that produce connective tissue swelling, such as psoriatic arthritis ,scleroderma, anklylosing spondylitis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Gotu kola,historically, has also been used as a treatment to cure hepatitis, syphilis, stomach ulcers, mental fatigue, epilepsy, diarrhea, fever, and asthma.

Using internally Gotu kola is very beneficial for health it improves circulation in veins as well as capillaries, stimulates hair and nail growth, helpful in curing arthritis,boost vascularisation of connective tissue. The asiaticosides and triterpenes have modulating actions on the development & metabolism of connective tissue.Its used to treat the symptoms of skin tuberculosis & leprosy, as the bacteria are coated in a wax shape substance that the body's immune system cant puncture , but this waxy coating is dissolved by centella, there by allowing the body's immune system to destroy the bacteria.

Side Effects

Scientific reports show that Gotu kola may cause headache,upset stomach, skin allergy and burning sensations, nausea, dizziness, and extreme drowsiness .These side effects tend to cause with high doses of gotu kola.

It may cause spontaneous abortion in women so it is recommended not to use gotu kola by pregnant women.

Should not be taken by those individuals with a known hypersensitivity to herbs in the celery family.

Gotu kola may cause hyperglycemia and heighten serum cholesterol, and as such, should not be used in conjunction with anti-diabetics or anti-lipidemic medication.

Gotu kola may cause drowsiness and may increase blood cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Therefore, individual with diabetes should not use gotu kola.

One scientific study on animal suggests that an ingredient of gotu kola, asiaticoside, may have weak cancer-causing effects when applied to the skin.

Dosage

  • Tea:

Take ¼ to ½ teaspoon dried herb to a cup with 150 ml water boil for 10 minutes. Use three times in a day.

  • Capsules:

1,000 to 4,000 mg. Use three times in a day.

  • Tincture:

(1:2) 30% alcohol with 30 to 60 drops . Use three times in a day.

Drug Interactions

Gotu kola may heighten the level of drowsiness produced by some drugs such as lorazepam (Ativan), barbiturates, such as phenobarbital, narcotics, such as codeine.

Gotu kola may heighten cholesterol levels and may work against cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Gotu kola may increase blood sugar levels and may work against drugs that lower blood sugar levels.
