Herb Description

Ginkgo is a deciduous tree .It is one of the most unique tree with no close living relatives. Ginkgo is the oldest living tree species, geological records show this plant has been growing on earth for 150 - 200 million years. As a deciduous tree its male and female flowers grow on different trees. A Ginkgo tree can grow about 100 feet tall and a spread of 9 metres. Its trunk become 13 feet wide in diameter and is straight columnar and meagerly branched. Some trees are very broad spreading, others are narrow.

They are generally deep rooted and resistive to wind and snow damage. Young trees are mostly tall and slender, & sparsely branched have a central trunk,pyramidal like structure , with regular, lateral, ascending, asymmetrical branching and open growth. Older trees have an oval to upright spreading growth and irregular branching and tremendous sized limbs and trunk. It is famous for its unique seeds, which have long been used as a meal source in Asia. The odor of a great mass of rotting seeds can also be over powering.

Its flowers are dioecious small green males are borne on 1 inch long catkins & female cones are 1 1/2 - 2 inch long peduncles, present in mid-spring. Its leaves are alternate,fanlike, simple, 2 - 3 inches long and wide, parallel, fan-like veination. Its twigs are light reddish brown, buds are broadly conical to domelike shape and reddish brown in color .Its bark are light grayish brown with irregular long raised strips, eventually becoming deeply furrowed.

Uses and Benefits

In traditional Chinese medicine Ginkgo seeds have been used for thousands of years, and cooked seeds are normally eaten. More recently,extract of ginkgo leaf has been used to cure a number of disorders and conditions such as fatigue,asthma, bronchitis, and tinnitus .

Today, people use extracts of ginkgo leaf hoping to improve memory, to cure or help prevent Alzheimer's symptoms and other kinds of dementia, to ebb intermittent claudicating , and to cure sexual dysfunction, multiple sclerosis, tinnitus, and other health disorders.

The Ginkgo leaves extract contains ginkgolides & flavonoid glycosides and and has been used pharmaceutically. It has many alleged nootropic actions, and is mainly used to heighten the memory power and anti vertigo actions.

Ginkgo is used to improve circulation in the brain include improved short and long term memory,enhance reaction time and improved mental clarity .Ginkgo is acts as a powerful antioxidant and contributes to the oxidation of free radicals which are thought to contribute to premature aging and dementia.

Ginkgo is often used to treat elderly persons with Alzheimer's and other symptoms of cerebral insufficiency. Cerebral insufficiency is a general term for a collection of symptoms that include difficulties of concentration and memory, absentmindedness, confusion, lack of energy, depressive mood, anxiety, dizziness, tinnitus, and headache

Side Effects

Adverse effects related to ginkgo are relatively mild and infrequent and include upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea or headache may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor promptly.

Ginkgo's antiplatelet action should be considered if the person is using some other agents with similar blood-thinning actions. In the unwell condition individual have an allergic reaction to this plant, seek immediate medical attention.

There are some undesirable side effects with using Ginkgo, especially for persons with blood circulation problems and those using anti-coagulants such as warfarin & aspirin .

There are some case reports of individuals on ginkgo having unusual or excessive bleeding.It can create a hindrance with the properties of platelets, a kind of blood element which is crucial to blood clotting.

It is recommended not to use Ginkgo by those people who are using MAOI ( monoamine oxidase inhibitors ) or by pregnant women without first consulting a doctor.

Dosage

  • Capsules :

1 to 2 capsule three times a day.

  • Fluid Extract (1:1)

10 to 30 drops three times a day in water or juice

  • Tincture :

1/2 to 1 teaspoon three times a day in juice or water .

Ginkgo may interfere with NSAID drug( nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory) include ibuprofen,naproxen , etodolac,nabumetone , piroxicam etc.
