Goldenrod - Uses and BenefitsAlternative Names: European goldenrod ,Wound weed, Blue Mountain tea, Sweet-scented goldenrod, Anise-scented goldenrod, True goldenrod. Herb DescriptionGoldenrod is an yellow flowering erect perennial plant in the Family Asteraceae . There are about 125 varieties of Goldenrod deep-rooted to North America. There are 30 species of goldenrods in Ontario. Goldenrods are very common wildflowers all over North America & Virginia . It is difficult to explain only single, because most of them are very similar and hard to tell apart,being found in the pastures & meadows , along roads, ditches and waste regions in North America , and some from Europe that were introduced some 250 years ago. Goldenrods are easily accepted by their golden inflorescence with hundreds of tiny capitula, but few are spike shaped and other have auxiliary racemes . Goldenrod is unique among the blossoms. It provides our bees their last chance at a good winter feed. It is not only rich in nectar, but has a very high value , protein-rich pollen, the goldenrod is many times unfairly blamed for producing hay fever in humans. The pollen producing these allergy problems is mainly caused by Ragweed . Goldenrod flowers in summer. Most species have sensational displays of bright yellow flowers. Flowers are bunchy on long stalks. Most Goldenrods have long, narrow leaves. Goldenrods are great significance to other wildlife, particularly insects. Many animals come to Goldenrod to drink nectar , collect pollen , nibble leaves and stems, prey on other insects, or lay eggs. It is used by herbalists for a wide range of health disorders such as allergies ,arthritis,colds and flu ,inflammation of the bladder or urinary tract ,kidney stones ,laryngitis ,sore throats . Uses and BenefitsIt has been used as a treatment for cicatrization of old ulcers in combination with powder . It has been prescribed in many maladies, as it is a good diaphoretic in warm infusion, and is in this type also effective in amenorrhoea & dysmenorrhoea . It is efficacious in diphtheria, if given internally. Goldenrod has numerous anti-inflammatory and antiseptic actions, and is an excellent diuretic. It can be taken in combination with echinacea for the treatment of cystitis & nephritis. It can be used for upper respiratory infections when there is an over abundance of mucus & postnasal drip . Goldenrod accommodates bioflavonoids, which provide power to the veins and is therefore indicated for varicose veins and fragile capillaries. It is also a carminative, and will ebb flatulence & colic . Because of its anti fungal actions, it can be used as a douche. Goldenrod is commonly made as an infusion . Side EffectsGoldenrod is usually considered safe. Some persons may develop a mild allergic reaction to the herb. This medicine may produce side effects like eye infection,nose infection. Tell to doctor if individual have side effects that think are caused by this medicine. Herbs have active substances that can produce side effects and interact with other herbs, supplements, or medications.
